Amazon MGM Studios has officially given a straight-to-series order to the upcoming drama titled Obsession, based on Catherine Ryan Howard’s bestselling thriller novel 56 Days. The project hails from horror filmmaker James Wan, whose TV credits include executive producing CBS’ MacGyver series and 2019’s short-lived Swamp Thing series.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Karyn and Lisa on this propulsive and sexy thriller based on Catherine’s captivating novel,” Wan said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “Their vision for the series brings a fresh take for contemporary audiences, while still remaining true to the genre.”
What to expect in Obsession?
Obsession will be written and executive produced by Lisa Zwerling and Karyn Usher. The story will be center around two strangers who instantly fell in love with each other. However, their whirlwind romance unexpectedly ends in murder. Executive producers are Howard, Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett , with Danielle Bozzone signing on to oversee the project for Atomic Monster.
“Fifty-six days later, homicide investigators arrive at Oliver’s apartment to find an unidentified body — brutally murdered and intentionally decomposed,” reads the synopsis. “Did he kill her? Did she kill him? Intercutting between an intense single day in the present investigation and the twisted trajectory of the young lovers’ affair in the past, the series is both a unique crime story and a riveting, erotic, psychological thriller.”
