Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is currently bringing Titan-sized action to the small screen with a series chronicling the emergence of monsters in the MonsterVerse that includes King Kong and Godzilla. It’s been relatively well received so far, but its creators are keen to bring a second season’s worth of story.
Go Go for More Godzilla
In a series of interviews with The Direct, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters creators answered questions on the possibility of season 2, and there’s a tentative, but fairly upbeat outlook on that.
“Well, it wasn’t designed as a limited series,” said Executive Producer Matt Fraction. ”We certainly love the characters and playing in the world. And if we are so lucky and so fortunate, I think we could keep going for as long as people want to keep watching, quite honestly. Yeah.”
“We love the story that we told this season,” said fellow Executive Producer Tory Tunnel. ”And we hope that people will show up. And you know, if they do in droves, and then hopefully, it’ll give us an opportunity to tell more.”
It’s a sentiment backed up by showrunner Chris Black.
“I mean, it’s kind of really up to the viewers and the fans. We hope that they respond to the story that, what we’re telling, [and] that they’ll want to see more. We had to sort of build this from the ground up as a TV series, as something that was going to go for 10 hours and hopefully, if we’re lucky, two seasons, three seasons–whatever we’re lucky enough to get.”
Director Matt Shakman agreed on wanting more Monarch, praising the people involved.
“We poured our heart and soul into this season. We love it. We’re so proud of it. We hope people love it. If I could knock on some wood, I would hate to talk about future seasons until people have a chance to watch this one. And hopefully, they love it.”
With largely positive reviews, and being able to lean on the established name of Godzilla are in the show’s favor when it comes to a sequel, but as we so often see, shows can be dropped even with good numbers behind them. Much will depend on the success of Godzilla X Kong which will continue the story of Monarch and its many monsters.
After surviving Godzilla’s attack on San Francisco, Cate is shaken yet again by a shocking secret. Amid monstrous threats, she embarks on a globetrotting adventure to learn the truth about her family—and the mysterious organization known as Monarch.
The show stars Kurt and Wyatt Russell as the same character, Lee Shaw, in different time periods. It also stars Anna Sawai as Cate Randa, Kiersey Clemons as May Olowe-Hewitt, Ren Watabe as Kentaro Randa, Mari Yamamoto as Keiko Miura, Anders Holm as Bill Randa, John Goodman as an older Randa, Joe Tippett as Tim, and Elisa Lasowski as Duvall.
