Donald Glover and his brother, Stephen Glover, have signed on to write the Lando Calrissian Star Wars TV series for Disney+.
A Lando TV series was first announced in December 2020. Justin Simien, creator of Dear White People and director of the new Disney horror movie Haunted Mansion, was originally attached dto the project. However, it appears that it is no longer the case, as the Glover brothers will be writing the series alone. The brothers previously collaborated together on the TV show Atlanta. The deal was made before the writer’s strike.
Glover portrayed the character in the 2018 movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. He portrayed a younger version of the character Billy Dee Williams portrayed in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
“I would love to play Lando again,” Glover told GQ (via Variety) “It’s a fun time, being him. It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious. The past couple of years, this pandemic shit, it really had people experience time… People realize their time is valuable. You only get so much. I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with.”
Former writer Simien shared an update on the project in early July, saying, “I certainly poured my heart and spent a lot of time working with them to put together a really great show. It feels like everybody loves it. And, you know, I was told we had to put a pause on it because of scheduling, and the next update I got [was in 2020], some years ago. So I don’t know, I have no idea what’s going on with it.”
When is the Lando release date?
There is no word on a release date yet. The next Star Wars Disney+ series will be Ahsoka, premiering on August 23, 2023.
