Rick and Morty Season 7 is still coming despite Justin Roiland’s exit from the show, and during the show’s recent panel at San Diego Comic-Con, an update on the season was given.
What do we know about Rick and Morty Season 7?
After Roiland — who co-created the series alongside Dan Harmon — was charged with felony domestic abuse (which were dismissed earlier this year) and a litany of other accusations about Roiland’s troubling behavior while working on the show, he was fired, and is set to be replaced as the voices of Rick and Morty.
During the panel (via The Hollywood Reporter), executive producer of the series Steve Levy said that the team behind the series was “closing in” on finishing up the process of recasting Roiland. He then said that the upcoming seventh season would be “great,” and that he’s impressed with everything that’s been shown so far.
“We are closing in on the end of our process of the recast,” said Levy. “It’s gonna be great. I am thoroughly impressed with everything that’s going on, including all the work on season seven.”
While Levy didn’t confirm who they had been looking at to replace Roiland, a fan did ask whether or not the new voices would be similar to Roiland’s, or completely different. Levy confirmed that they would be “soundalikes,” and that Rick and Morty would be the same exact characters as they were.
“It’s soundalikes,” Levy said. “The characters are the same characters — no change.”
In 2018, Adult Swim ordered 70 more episodes of Rick and Morty, guaranteeing it would run through at least Season 10 of the series. After cutting ties with Roiland, the show will still credit him as a co-creator, but it seems as if his participation in the series has ended fully.
An Orange County District Attorney dismissed the domestic violence charges earlier this year, citing insufficient evidence. Responding to the claims, Roiland called the outcome “justice” for him, and continued to maintain other allegations made against him were false. However, neither Adult Swim nor Hulu (who Roiland worked with on Solar Opposites and Koala Man and has since been replaced) seems ready to welcome him back in any capacity.
