HBO Max’s Arkham Asylum Series Finds New Showrunner

The planned spin-off of The Batman centered around the iconic Arkham Asylum has found its showrunner, with Variety reporting that filmmaker Antonio Campos has boarded the project.

The report mentions that Campos will direct and serve as showrunner and executive producer of the series when the show is eventually made. The last caveat is a bit of an important one, as Campos is now the third writer brought onto the DC project since its initial announcement in July 2020. Since then, the show has morphed from a drama series about the inner workings of the Gotham City Police Department to a series based on Arkham Asylum.

Prior to Campos joining the series, Terence Winter and Joe Barton were both set to write the series, with Winter leaving over creative differences and Barton — who had joined on after Winter — leaving as well. Campos does have a history with HBO, though, having written, directed, and run the critically acclaimed true crime limited series The Staircase for HBO Max.

The Arkham spinoff is being executive produced by Reeves through his 6th & Idaho banner as part of his overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, under which he will help develop and produce various series across WarnerMedia’s multiple platforms including fresh streaming service HBO Max.

The upcoming project isn’t the only The Batman spin-off that Reeves is currently working on as he is also developing a Penguin series which will be led by Colin Farrell as he reprises his role as Oswald Cobblepot from the Robert Pattinson-led DC film.
