Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the hit manga and anime series Yu Yu Hakusho will land on the streaming service on December 2023.

Announced on Netflix’s official Geeked Twitter account (via Anime News Network), the news comes from Netflix’s Japan Festival 2021, which saw a bunch of other announcements with Yu Yu Hakusho being one of the biggest. The series will stream on simultaneously worldwide on the service and will see Kazutaka Sakamoto executive produce the series with Akira Morii producing the live-action take on the series.

“One fateful day, Yuusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old delinquent with a dim future, gets a miraculous chance to turn it all around when he throws himself in front of a moving car to save a young boy,” reads the official synopsis for the manga. “His ultimate sacrifice is so out of character that the authorities of the spirit realm are not yet prepared to let him pass on. Koenma, heir to the throne of the spirit realm, offers Yuusuke an opportunity to regain his life through completion of a series of tasks. With the guidance of the death god Botan, he is to thwart evil presences on Earth as a Spirit Detective.”

Not much else has been announced on the show, and with such a long window between now and December 2023, it’s likely we won’t be hearing too much until more casting news comes to light. In the meantime, fans will have another acclaimed anime live-action adaptation to check out, as Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop series will launch later this month on Netflix.
