Variety brings word that Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) will star in the upcoming HBO limited series Londongrad as KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko. The project is based on the book The Terminal Spy written by Alan Cowell (order here).

“The series tells the true story of Alexander Litvinenko, the KGB agent and later defector killed by poisoning with the radioactive isotope polonium-210 in 2006 in England,” the outlet describes.
Cumberbatch will play Litvinenko and will also executive produce the limited series via his Sunnymarch banner. Londongrad will be written by David Scarpa (The Man in the High Castle) and directed by Oscar winner Bryan Fogel (Icarus).
Along with Cumberbatch, Scarpa and Fogel, under his Orwell Productions banner, will also executive produce along with Len Amato of Crash&Salvage, Adam Ackland, and Claire Marshall of Sunnymarch.

Cumberbatch will next be seen in the biographical drama The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, followed by the drama feature The Power of the Dog, written and directed by Jane Campion and based on the book by Thomas Savage, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
