Final Fantasy is no stranger to spreading out into other mediums and now one of its numbered entries is getting a television adaptation. Final Fantasy IX will be getting an animated series aimed at children and young teenagers. It will reportedly be quite some time until it airs because production is being projected to start “by the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022.”

Kidscreen reports that Cyber Group Studios has signed a deal with Square Enix to make the show and in addition to producing it, Cyber Group will also handle “worldwide distribution, licensing, and merchandise.” CEO of Cyber Group Studios Pierre Sissmann told Kidscreen that they are wrapping up the pitch and will begin pitching it to broadcaster quite soon. He did not know how many episodes it would nor how long they would be. Sissman said the company was attracted to Final Fantasy‘s popularity along with “a chance to expand the brand with new characters and adventures.” He also stated this animated show would be for newcomers and fans alike.
“The games have a strong co-viewing potential. For those who do know Final Fantasy IX, this will be an [introduction],” he said. “And for the many who don’t, this will immerse them in a universe they’ll love.”

Final Fantasy IX was the last entry on the original PlayStation when it came on in 2000 and also marked the end of the 2D era. The series jumped to 3D when it came to the PS2. It was and remains a well-received installment in the long-running RPG series because of its story, characters, and turn-based battles. Since Cyber Group Studios is known for its shows for young children, it remains to be seen how it will tackle the more mature themes of Final Fantasy IX like identity, purpose, and responsibility.
