While we may still have a ways to go for the arrival of the fifteenth season of the longest-running American live-action comedy series, FXX isn’t letting a cloud shine over It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia anytime soon as the series has been renewed through season 18, Chairman of FX Networks John Landgraf announced at the Disney Investors presentation.

With the global pandemic causing a lot of future productions on both the big and small screens to remain in limbo or take longer to develop, and the series’ renewal only coming in May, it’s no surprise co-developer/star Glenn Howerton and the crew are taking their time with the next season of Sunny, though he revealed to ComingSoon.net recently it’s taking a little longer than normal due to various unforeseen circumstances, especially with co-developer/creator/star Rob McElhenney’s schedule on his hit Apple TV+ series.
“We’ve been talking about overarching concepts, but we haven’t really gotten down to business because Rob’s still finishing up the second season of Mythic Quest, which has been constantly put on hold and then they go back and get put on hold again because of COVID,” Howerton explained. “There’s not really much to report, we’ve got overarching ideas that we want to explore next season that we’re all three of us really excited about, but as far as creating stories and writing stuff, that hasn’t happened yet.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows the misguided dreams and blundered schemes of The Gang — Mac, Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Charlie (Day), Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson) and Frank (Danny DeVito) — as they try to navigate life, love, and their long-suffering bar, Paddy’s Pub.
Season 14 gunned for the Best 14th Season accolade as the Gang went to extremes for their roles as Mac learned a new language, Charlie did a period piece, Dennis attempted a one-act play, Dee cut her hair and Frank performed a death scene. Sure enough, the 10-episode season received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and is setting a record with its upcoming fifteenth season as it becomes the longest-running live-action comedy in American TV history.

The series was created by McElhenney, who also serves as executive producer along with Howerton, Day, Michael Rotenberg, Nick Frenkel, Tom Lofaro, Scott Marder and David Hornsby. The show is produced by FX Productions.
