While chatting with the 34-year-old star about his acclaimed Quibi series The Stranger, DeHaan praised the ensemble cast assembled for the upcoming King adaptation and expressing excitement about returning to finish production.
“I think it’s gonna be really rad, we were doing really cool things, the set felt really good,” DeHaan described. “The director’s awesome, the DP is really cool. I really hope we get to finish soon because it feels like we’re making something really wild and crazy and scary and awesome, I’m really excited about it.”
Though he kept his lips sealed on some of the details surrounding his character, Jim Dooley, DeHaan did reveal that it will be a different vision of the antagonist from the 2006 source material and that to bring him to life, the development came from conversations between director Pablo Larrain (Jackie), King and the star.
“He’s actually written a few scenes based on our conversations,” DeHaan noted. “It’s been really fun and this character, I think, will be one to remember. He’s a weird dude, and I don’t want to give too much away, but we’ve had a lot of fun taking what Stephen had in the book and bringing it to modern-day, but also in a really off-putting, strange and disgusting kind of way.”
Written and executive produced by King, the 8-episode miniseries will follow Lisey two years after her husband’s death as she begins facing amazing realities about her husband that she had repressed and forgotten. The series is a production of Warner Bros. Television.
Lisey’s Story was inspired by King’s own experience when he was involved in a serious accident in June 1999. The idea for the novel sprang from a sudden realization he had when he came home from the hospital and saw that all of his belongings are in boxes. Because of that, he saw a vision of what his studio would look like after his death.
Alongside DeHaan, the cast for the miniseries includes Clive Owen (The Knick), Julianne Moore (The Woman in the Window), Joan Allen (A Good Marriage), Sung Kang (F9: The Fast Saga) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight).

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams will also executive produce via his Bad Robot productions, marking the third series he has set up under the Apple banner. The others include Sara Bareilles’ Little Voice and My Glory Was I Had Such Friends starring Jennifer Gardner. Moore and Ben Stephenson are also set as executive producers.
Lisey’s Story will also be the third collaboration between King and Abrams, who have worked together on the 11.22.63 and the Hulu series Castle Rock which returned for its second season this past October. The Stranger is currently available to stream in full on Quibi!
