Open: Lena Waithe Developing a New Drama Series For Amazon Studios

Emmy-winning writer-actress Lena Waithe has teamed up with Amazon Studios to develop a brand new drama series titled Open, which will center on open marriages or relationships. Should the project push through, it will be a part of Waithe’s overall deal with Amazon which she signed last year.

“Society has such a conservative way of looking at marriage,” Waithe said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “I do think that we as a nation need to reevaluate what marriage looks like for us as a country — because whatever we have right now, it ain’t working.”

Waithe added, “I’ve never been in an open marriage, but it’s fascinating to me. We live in a world where, if I told you I cheated on my wife, you would be like, ‘Yeah, that’s the way it goes.’ But if I told you that I’m in an open marriage, it would be as if I told you I’m joining the Church of Scientology.”

Open is currently not the only project that Waithe is working on for Amazon. This includes an upcoming horror anthology series titled Them: Covenant which will follow the story of a black couple, who are moving to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood.

Waithe has appeared in a number of series such as Master of None, Transparent, Dear White People and the most recent one is Westworld Season 3 with the first one earning her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing-Comedy Series. The 36-year-old actress has also produced 2014’s Tessa Thompson-led film Dear White People and Melina Matsoukas’ crime drama Queen & Slim which she had also written.
