According to Variety, HBO is in the process of developing a brand new half-hour series about backyard wrestling titled Tre Cnt (aka Tre Count), with Dwayne Johnson and Issa Rae attached to serve as executive producers. This project marks Johnson and Rae’s latest collaboration with the network, who have worked with on their respective shows Ballers, which aired its final season in 2019, and Insecure, which is currently airing its fourth season.

Tre Cnt will follow the story of a young dock worker and struggling pro-wrestler named Cassius Jones, who inherited a life-insurance money and a deed to a shotgun house from his grandfather. With the help of his working-class family, neighbors, and friends, he will be using his inheritance to start start a hip-hop centric backyard wrestling empire in Houston’s Third Ward (The Tre).
The series is written and created by Mohamad El Masri (Here and Now), who will also serve as an executive producer along with showrunner Judah Miller. Dwayne Johnson will executive produce along with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner. While Issa Rae will executive produce through her Issa Rae Productions along with Montrel McKay. 3 Arts Entertainment’s Dave Becky, Tom Lassally, and Jonathan Berry are also set as executive producers.

Before Dwayne Johnson became one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster action stars, he first gained recognition as a WWE wrestler The Rock, following the legacy of his late father and WWE hall of famer Rocky Johnson. He most recently starred in last year’s Hobbs & Shaw and Jumanji: The Next Level. Johnson will next be seen in three high-profile films: Disney’s Jungle Cruise, Warner Bros.’ Black Adam and Netflix’s Red Notice.
Issa Rae is best known for his viral web series titled Awkward Black Girl which premiered on YouTube in 2011. She earned two Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her lead performance in HBO’s comedy-drama Insecure. She will next be seen in Netflix’s romcom film The Lovebirds and Blumhouse’s horror thriller Vengeance starring alongside Ashton Kutcher.
