Dwayne Johnson Unveils Production Start Window for Live-Action Moana Movie

Dwayne Johnson has shared a brand new update about Disney’s forthcoming live-action Moana movie. This also includes a behind-the-scenes video showing Johnson in a recording booth as part of his preparation to portray Maui in live-action.

On his social media account, Johnson confirmed that they are currently aiming to start production on the live-action Moana movie later this year around fall. This comes after the project’s theatrical release date was delayed from June 2025 to July 10, 2026.

The live-action adaptation will be directed by Tony winner Thomas Kail. It is produced by Johnson, Dany and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner, alongside Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co. It is executive produced by Auli‘i Cravalho and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for Moana, will also take part in the remake’s production alongside Samoan industry pro Dana Ledoux Miller.

Moana 2 Sets 2024 Release Date

Prior to the live-action movie’s debut, Disney will first released the highly-anticipated sequel to 2016’s Moana in theaters on November 27, just in time for this year’s Thanksgiving holiday. Directed and written by David G. Derrick Jr., Moana 2 will feature the voices of Auliʻi Cravalho and Johnson, as they reprise their respective roles as Moana and Maui.

The original was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. It was not only a commercial success with a gross of over $600 million, but it also earned positive reviews from critics and earned two Oscar nominations including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
