Community cast ready for reunion, creator Dan Harmon uncertain

It’s been almost five years since fans last saw their favorite junior college study group in the cult favorite comedy Community for its sixth and final season. Though there have been talks and hopes of Community reunion, it’s always been up to the cast and crew to make it happen, with more teasing of the film happening at Vulture Festival this week. When asked about the future of the story, cast members Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong and Yvette Nicole Brown all were very happy to be on board for a film adaptation, expressing they would return in a heartbeat if they were asked. Now the pressure is stooped at creator Dan Harmon’s doorstep.

Who is supposed to say, ‘everyone do this’?” he fretted. “That’s what I’ve always said. I don’t know how it starts. Then I write it and half the people are like, ‘meh, I don’t want to do it.‘”

I just would love to have everybody back again,” Brown said. “It was a lot of long hours, but we had a lot of fun. It’s a family, so that would be fun.”

Harmon, who co-created the acclaimed animated Adult Swim series Rick and Morty, was infamously fired from the series before being brought back for the sixth and final season, noting he wasn’t sure how or why he got his job back. Despite joking that “live-action doesn’t move as much merchandise,” he did acknowledge the major impact the series brought to viewers.

This is absolutely the thing… of which I am most proud, forever and ever.” Harmon said. “Network TV is not necessarily dead, but it’s turned into a different thing with [all the] streaming platforms now. We were there with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and we were there at the end of this crazy era — the end of must-see TV.

Starring Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase, Danny Pudi, and Yvette Nicole Brown, along with all kinds of crazy supporting cast members, the show chronicles the ups and downs of life at a surreal community college. It started out semi-grounded and only got crazier over the course of its six seasons, both on-screen and behind-the-scenes. The show spent its first three years constantly on the brink of cancellation over at NBC.

Eventually, due to a clash between the show’s notoriously hard-to-work-with mastermind Harmon and the show’s notoriously hard-to-work-with actor Chevy Chase, Harmon was fired and Chase quit before the show’s fourth season. They brought Harmon back for the fifth and final season at NBC, where the show moved to Yahoo!’s short-lived streaming service for an additional sixth season.
