Newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishan Casts As Lead in Mindy Kaling’s Netflix Series

Netflix has announced the newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishan has officially been tapped for the lead role in Emmy Award-nominated writer-actress Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)’s forthcoming coming-of-age comedy series. The Canadian newcomer was cast through an open casting call announced by Kaling last April which had over 15,000 applicants. In her acting debut, Ramakrishan is set to portray the role of Devi, who is described as an overachieving high school sophomore with a short fuse.

The untitled series is co-created and co-written by Kaling and Fisher. Inspired by Kaling’s own childhood, the 10-episode series will follow the complicated life of a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl. 3 Arts’ Howard Klein and David Miner will be executive producing along with Kaling and Fisher, who are also set to be the series’ showrunners. The project will mark the second collaboration between Kaling and Fisher, who have both worked on the romantic-comedy series The Mindy Project.
