Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 6 Recap

In the previous episode of HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Atticus called Ji-Ah after translating Titus’ pages. Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 6 showed us the truth about Ji-Ah and her relationship with Atticus during the Korean War.

Kumiho

Ji-Ah lived with her mother, Soon Hee. She trained to be a nurse prior to U.S. involvement in the Korean War, but all her mother wanted her to focus on was bringing home men. Ji-Ah loved Judy Garland and watching American movies, but that didn’t seem to impress the men she met while speed dating with her friends. However, her best friend, Young-Ja, invited her out with her date. At the dance hall, Ji-Ah met a man and brought him home. When they had sex, tails came from her body, and she consumed his soul.

Soon Hee had asked a mudang to summon a kumiho fox spirit into the body of her daughter, who died because of her husband, to kill him. The kumiho in Ji-Ah’s body needed to consume one hundred souls to become human, and Soon Hee believed that she would have her daughter back if she did.

Young-Ja appeared to have feelings for the real Ji-Ah. They watched a crowd lynch a man, and Young-Ja villainized the American soldiers who let it happen. One day, American soldiers rounded up the nurses from Ji-Ah’s hospital. They were looking for a communist spy among them. The soldiers had them kneel and started shooting them in the head. Young-Ja confessed when it was Ji-Ah’s turn. Atticus was among the soldiers who took Young-Ja away.

Ji-Ah recognized Atticus as he was being treated in her hospital. She decided that he would be her hundredth soul. However, after planning a romantic date with featuring a private showing of a Judy Garland movie, Ji-Ah couldn’t go through with it. He told her he was a virgin, and she was beginning to have feelings for him. Ji-Ah told him that she had planned to kill him because he had murdered Young-Ja. They had sex, but the tails didn’t come out.

They spent months together until Atticus told her that he had earned enough points to go home. However, he could stay, but Ji-Ah didn’t want to ask him to do that. She tried to tell him the truth about herself. Unfortunately, when they had sex, her tails came out, but Atticus survived. Ji-Ah saw that he would die and tried to warn him, but he ran away, not understanding what had just happened. Ji-Ah was heartbroken, and Soon Hee comforted her.

Soon Hee and Ji-Ah went to the mudang. Soon Hee accepted to cost of coming to her. Ji-Ah wanted to know if Atticus would die like she had seen.
