In the previous episode of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Commander Lawrence promised June that he would help her get children out of Gilead, while the response from the Marthas was overwhelming. In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 11, June learned that it won’t be as easy as she thought, and the Waterfords took a drive to meet Tuello.
52 Children
The muffin response from the Marthas indicated that they had 52 children they were willing to move. The only problem was that the leadership in the Marthas’ network wanted June to stand down. After June’s conviction convinced them to let her move forward, they indicated that a bartender at Jezebel’s named Billy had access to a cargo plane.
Breakfast Uneaten
June walked in on Eleanor with a gun to Joseph’s head. June calmly talked her down. Though she completely understood Eleanor’s reasoning, June needed him for her plan.
The Marthas’ visit distracted June and Beth. Sienna found Eleanor’s breakfast still outside her door, uneaten. No one had seen the Commander. They realized that the Lawrences were gone. The gun incident had pushed Joseph into action. However, Joseph came back, not because of his conscience but because he no longer had the proper authorizations. The Eyes were onto him. Sensing his eventual doom, Joseph promised June that he would find her a kind commander, but June insisted that he take her to Jezebel’s right then.
Jezebel’s Revisited
Joseph waited in the car as a dressed-up June walked into Jezebel’s. She talked to Billy and offered the Lawrences’ art collection in exchange for helping her move the children. While there, she ran into Commander Winslow, who recognized her. He had her follow her into a room. Inside, there was a struggle as June fought him off. She stabbed him several times with a pen and killed him with a blow to the head. The Marthas, including the one June helped from Chicago, cleaned up the room and burned the body.
Road Trip
The Waterfords were going through with Serena’s plan to contact Tuello. They drove through the countryside together, and despite the illegality, Fred let Serena drive. They stayed overnight at a remote house where Serena aired her resentment over the loss of her career. That night, they reconnected.
When they met Tuello, he asked them to go with him to a safe place. Serena insisted that she trusted him. They drove into Canada where Tuello had Fred arrested for his crimes.
