In the previous episode of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, summer ended, and everyone’s time in the Catskills was over. In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 2 episode 7, Benjamin introduced Midge to the art scene, and the Weissmans and Maisels observed Yom Kippur.
The Most Famous Unknown Artist
Benjamin took Midge to an art gallery. He had already purchased several of the paintings. Midge bought a painting of a woman for $25 out of the back room. Benjamin then took her to a bar where artists hang out. He pointed out Declan Howell, who was known for refusing to sell his paintings. He was drunk and stood on a bar to recite a medley of poems. Midge introduced Benjamin and herself to him, and he invited them to his studio in the morning.
At his studio, Declan pretended not to remember Benjamin. When Benjamin asked about his paintings, he said they were not for sale. He left Midge there to make calls at the corner store. Declan took her through a hidden door to see his greatest masterpiece. He had intended to hang it in the home he would never have. When Benjamin came back, he told Midge that Benjamin could choose any painting and leave a check. Declan couldn’t know where Benjamin lived or else he would try to get it back.
Starting a Business
Susie called a family meeting with her siblings, Tess and Artie, and Tess’s husband Skint. She told them she was starting a business and needed money. Susie proposed selling the land their grandmother left them, but they refused. Artie and Skint left for the bar. Tess gave Susie their mother’s car to use for touring.
Another Toast
Joel threw a party at Maisel & Roth to celebrate the purchase of their building. Mrs. Moskowitz was helping him line up dates with three women that week. That night, he got drunk off champagne. At the end of the night, Archie got the girls to leave and put Joel to bed. Joel congratulated him on his third child and his ability to keep his marriage and family. It was one year since he ended his marriage.
Yom Kippur
Susie called Midge at B. Altman to tell her that an east coast booker, Phil Masserino, was going to see her perform. Unfortunately, it would be the same night as Yom Kippur. After the temple service, Midge cornered Abe to help her sneak out to do the show. Abe told her she should tell everyone about her stand-up career that night. However, he had to pretend he never knew. At break-fast, Midge’s admission devolved into a mess. She used it as material for her act that night, and the crowd and Masserino had loved it. The next step was touring, according to Susie. Midge pointed out it was their one year anniversary.
