Rex Heuermann, dubbed the Long Island Serial Killer, now stands suspected in the Gilgo Beach serial killings. Prosecutors have alleged that Heuermann made incriminating and disturbing internet searches, per People Magazine. Authorities linked him to the case using a massive amount of digital and trace evidence.
The outlet reported that while searching the suspect’s house, investigators discovered that the suspect made hundreds of Internet searches about torturing and raping women. Other searches included child porn and rape porn like “girl begging for rape porn” and “torture redhead porn”. They claimed that Heuermann had also searched about his alleged victims and their families.
Authorities have unearthed at least 10 sets of human remains along Gilgo Beach but failed to link all the victims to Heuermann. He now faces three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder stemming from the deaths of Amber Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, and Megan Waterman. The accused also remains a primary suspect in Maureen Brainard-Barnes’ killing.
Rex Heuermann’s internet history & other evidence, examined
According to ENews, authorities have disclosed details about evidence that led them to Rex Heuermann, the suspected Long Island Serial Killer. This also includes the alarming internet search history they found while searching his house. Investigators allegedly traced his burner phones which led them to additional burner phones and fake email accounts. Following this, they learned that he had previously used false identities on multiple occasions.
In a July 19 interview, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney told People Magazine, “We saw all this, really sort of concerning searches that he was undergoing.” He also added, “In a 14-month period, over 200 times, he’s searching for information about the Gilgo investigation. He’s trying to figure out what we’re up to.”
The outlet further reported that, per NBC New York, prosecutors said that the suspect’s search history included disturbing questions. These were, “Why could law enforcement not trace the calls made by the long island serial killer.” Another question was, “Why hasn’t the long island serial killer been caught.” Other incriminating internet searches were about sexual abuse toward women, child pornography, and searches for victims and their families.
Furthermore, Heuermann’s internet history proved that he was fascinated by other serial killers. Authorities claimed that he has searched for “11 currently active serial killers,” and “8 Terrifying Active Serial Killers (We Can’t Find).”
Police arrested Rex Heuermann on July 13 for the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. The accused allegedly murdered all three victims between 2009 and 2010 and buried their bodies on Long Island. He also remains a primary suspect in Maureen Brainard-Barnes’ murder.
According to ABC News, investigators used DNA evidence to link Heuermann to the killings. They got the DNA from male hair found on the burlap that the killer had used to wrap Waterman’s body. Forensics then used a leftover pizza crust the suspect threw into a garbage can in January 2023 to find a match. The sample also matched a DNA swab he gave after his arrest.
Heuermann remains in custody at the Suffolk County jail in New York. The suspected serial killer will make his next court appearance on November 15.
