Idaho Murders Update: When Is the Bryan Kohberger Trial?

Bryan Kohberger allegedly claimed the lives of four University of Idaho students. On November 13, 2022, the students were found dead in their off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho. Two days later, authorities confirmed the use of a sharp-edged weapon, resembling a knife, in these homicides.

The coroner’s report suggests that Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Kaylee Goncalves were attacked with a knife while they were asleep. In subsequent investigations, law enforcement made a significant breakthrough. They actively pursued a white Hyundai Elantra, which witnesses had seen near the crime scene at the time of the murders. This development underscored the ongoing commitment to crack the case.

Almost a month into the investigation, law enforcement announced the arrest of Bryan Kohberger in Albrightsville, PA, for these murders. He faced charges of burglary and four counts of first-degree murder.

However, the trial, originally scheduled for October 2, 2023, faced unexpected delays, leaving the case on a limbo.

What is Bryan Kohberger’s trial date?

Bryan Kohberger postponed his trial by waiving his right to a speedy trial during his appearance in Latah County Court. The Idaho state law mandates that criminal defendants receive a trial within six months, unless they willingly waive this right, allowing more time for defense preparation.

Kohberger’s lead public defender, Anne Taylor, explained that the original trial date of October 2 didn’t give the defense sufficient preparation time. This led to the waiver of the speedy trial right and an extension of legal proceedings. The attorney cited unpreparedness as a reason. This cast uncertainty on the trial’s rescheduling. Meanwhile, Prosecutor Bill Thompson expressed his intent to pursue the death penalty, and called the postponement a “smart move”.

While acknowledging her lack of trial preparedness, the attorney unveiled her legal strategy. This may include plans to challenge the death penalty. These decisions add layers of complexity to the ongoing legal proceedings.

Kohberger will make a court appearance on October 26 for a hearing related to the defense’s challenging legal motion seeking the dismissal of the indictment.
