In the new TV spot for Universal Pictures‘ upcoming Green Book, the film’s two stars Viggo Mortenson (A History of Violence) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) spend their days driving across America in search of dignity. While there’s not much in the way of new footage from the initial trailer, it still portrays the difficult story of institutionalized racism and friendship in the pre-Civil Rights south.
Green Book tells the story of Tony Lip (Mortensen), an Italian-American bouncer with a seventh-grade education, who’s hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class African-American pianist on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South. Together, they must rely on the “Negro Motorist Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for black people. Confronted with racism, danger—as well as unexpected humanity and humor—they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.
