Summer in the ’60s might have been the best season for romance, but it wasn’t particularly the most understanding time when it comes to dealing with marital problems based on intimacy. Witness love turning sour in this trailer for On Chesil Beach by clicking on the player below.
Adapted by Ian McEwan from his bestselling novel, the drama centers on a young couple of drastically different backgrounds in the summer of 1962. Following the pair through their idyllic courtship, the film explores sex and the societal pressure that can accompany physical intimacy, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night.
The film stars Academy Award-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Brooklyn), Billy Howle (Dunkirk), Anne-Marie Duff, Adrian Scarborough, Emily Watson and Samuel West.
This marks the feature film directorial debut of Dominic Cooke, who is a four-time Olivier Award-winning and BAFTA-nominated English theater director and playwright. Bleecker Street, a New York City-based film distributor, is the studio in charge of production. Some of the company’s notable releases include the biopic Trumbo, comedy drama Captain Fantastic, and heist comedy Logan Lucky.
On Chesil Bleach will be out in select theaters on May 18.
