At this year’s Austin Film Festival, one of the films I missed was Escobar: Paradise Lost. It was playing at the same time as The Imitation Game, and I opted to see that (and ended up enjoying it quite a bit). I did not hear the best things about this film, starring Benicio Del Toro as the famed drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, but Del Toro is such an interesting actor that I am extremely curious how he takes on this inherently interesting person.
The problem is Escobar is not the main character here. It is Nick, played by wet blanket Josh Hutcherson. I am fairly certain Hutcherson has been placed here to suck up the charm and charisma within a ten foot radius of his body, but he is still able to get work somehow. He is a big deterrent for me, but Del Toro is enough to keep me interested.
Escobar: Paradise Lost premiered its first trailer today, which you can watch below.
