Straight Outta Compton Interviews

Watch insight from Ice Cube, DJ Yella, director F. Gary Gray and the young cast in our exclusive Straight Outta Compton interviews

Straight Outta Compton opens in theaters on August 14 and gives us a look at the history of revolutionary rap group N.W.A. The film chronicles the rise of Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins) and Easy-E (Jason Mitchell) as they go from a group of young musicians in one of the worst parts of Los Angeles to icons in the music industry.

The film hinges on three young actors, all of whom have very little experience on the big screen. Straight Outta Compton managed to find not only talented performers, but ones that are practically clones of the real-life men they portray. Ice Cube’s real-life son O’Shea Jackson plays his father in his very first film after taking two years of acting lessons. Mitchell and Hawkins were found during a nationwide search. The film is produced by original members Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and the widow of Easy-E, Tomica Woods-Wright. Eric Lynn Wright, a.k.a. Easy-E died due to complications from AIDS in 1995.

ComingSoon.net sat down for video interviews with Jackson, Hawkins, and Mitchell, as well as producers and N.W.A. members Ice Cube and DJ Yella, and director F. Gary Gray during the film’s press tour. They talked about how relevant this film is today, discovering new talent and what it takes to get the story of still-living music icons into production.
