Sony Pictures has shared a brand new Harold and the Purple Crayon trailer for its upcoming live-action movie adaptation of Crockett Johnson’s classic 1955 children’s book.
The video shows Shazam!’s Zachary Levi as the titular book character who suddenly finds himself transported into the real world. Throughout his journey, he uses his imagination and magic crayon to bring happiness to the people he meets. The film arrives in theaters on August 2.

What is Harold and the Purple Crayon about?
“Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life — and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own,” reads the synopsis.
Harold and the Purple Crayon is directed by Carlos Saldanha from a screenplay written by David Guion and Michael Handelman. The film also stars Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, Alfred Molina, and Zooey Deschanel. It is executive produced by Jeremy Stein and Jenny Hinkey, with John Davis producing.
