A24 has released the official trailer for The Inspection, the forthcoming biographical drama starring Emmy nominee Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 18.
The video, which you can check out below, features a young gay Black man who willingly joins the Marines despite the grueling training and blatant homophobia he’ll be facing. It also highlights his complicated relationship with his estranged mother.

The Inspection is written and directed by Elegance Bratton, whose real-life story inspired the film. This marks the documentary filmmaker’s feature-length scripted film debut. It stars Jeremy Pope (Hollywood), Raúl Castillo (We the Animals), McCaul Lombardi (American Honey), Aaron Dominguez, Eman Esfandi, Aubrey Joseph (Cloak & Dagger), Andrew Kai, Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo), and Gabrielle Union (Think Like a Man).
“In Elegance Bratton’s deeply moving film inspired by his own story, a young, gay Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside,” reads the synopsis. “But even as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the grueling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength, and support in this new community, giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life.”
