Monumental Pictures to develop Amy Winehouse biopic
According to The Wrap, Monumental Pictures is currently in the process of developing a biographical film based on the life of the late singer Amy Winehouse with the singer’s family officially completing a deal with the studio to executive produce the upcoming biopic. The film’s proceeds will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which was created to help other people from alcohol and drug misuse and addiction.

Winehouse was a Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter best known for her distinct and soulful voice. Her second album titled Back to Black earned her five Grammy awards in 2008 which made her the first British woman to win five Grammys, including Best New Artist and Record of the Year. Almost nine years into her flourishing career, Winehouse died at the young age of 27 on July 23, 2011 due to alcohol poisoning.
“We now feel able to celebrate Amy’s extraordinary life and talent,” Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse said in a statement. “And we know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues. With Alison and Debra we have found fantastic British producers who understand what Amy meant to people, alongside an illustrious history of bringing amazing female driven stories to the big screen.”

The film will be produce by Alison Owen and Debra Hayward of Monumental Pictures with Geoff Deane to pen the biopic’s screenplay and will also serve as executive producer.
“We’re proud that Mitch Winehouse has entrusted us with the story of amazing Amy, an icon whose songs have provided the soundtrack to a generation.” Owen and Hayward added.
In 2015, A24 has produced a documentary about the ups and downs of Amy Winehouse’s success featuring unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks. The docu film was directed by BAFTA Award-winning director Asif Kapadia.
The studio is planning to start the film’s production in 2019.
