Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s The House with a Clock in its Walls opened to the #1 position at the domestic box office, bringing in $26.85 million and giving director Eli Roth a new record opening (his previous highest opening was 2006’s Hostel with $19.5 million). Internationally The House with a Clock in Its Walls opened in just14 markets this weekend, including Germany and Brazil, for an early total of $3.1 million. Based on the beloved children’s classic written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is directed by Eli Roth and stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Kyle MacLachlan, Colleen Camp, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Vanessa Anne Williams and Sunny Suljic.
In its second weekend, Lionsgate’s A Simple Favor moved up from third place to second place at the domestic box office. The film’s weekend total fell just 34%, bringing in $10.5 million and giving it a domestic total of $32.66 million. Considering the film’s reported budget of $20 million, the dark comedy-thriller will likely be a modest hit for the studio. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively lead the Paul Feig directed movie which also stars Andrew Rannells, Linda Cardellini, Jean Smart, and Rupert Friend.
Warner Bros. Pictures‘ The Nun fell to third third place, bringing in another $10.25 million. The Conjuring spin-off has now crossed the $100 million mark domestically. Internationally the film added another $35.4 million in a total of 80 overseas markets giving it an international total of $191.7 million and a global total of $292.6 million. The film is on par with other entries in the horror franchise and has already passed the first Annabelle spin-off, and will pass its 2017 prequel in just a matter of days. Directed by Corin Hardy, the film stars Demian Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her Conjuring 2 role as the title character.
20th Century Fox‘s The Predator tumbled 63% weekend-to-weekend and went from first to fourth place. The hard-R actioner brought in another $9 million giving it a domestic total of $40.7 million. Despite a dramatic drop, the film remains on par with previous entries in the series even when factoring in inflation adjustments. Internationally the film added another $15.3 million from 82 markets, lifting the international cume to $54.5 million and giving it a worldwide total of $95.2 million. Directed by Shane Black the film stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski.
Crazy Rich Asians held onto fifth place adding another $6.5 million to its already impressive box office. The film now sits at $159.4 million domestically. Coupled with its international total of $47 million, the adaptation has brought in $206.4 million globally against a reported budget of $30 million. Based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians features an international cast of stars led by Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, and Awkwafina, with Ken Jeong and Michelle Yeoh. The large starring ensemble also includes Henry Golding, making his feature film debut, Sonoya Mizuno , Chris Pang, Jimmy O. Yang, comedian Ronny Chieng, Remi Hii, and Nico Santos Jon M. Chu directed the contemporary romantic comedy.
Sony’s White Boy Rick fell from fourth to sixth place, adding another $5 million to its lackluster start. Domestically the biopic now sits at $17.4 million. Richie Merritt stars in the title role of the true story alongside Matthew McConaughey who plays his father in the Yann Demange film. White Boy Rick also features Oscar nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rory Cochrane, Brian Tyree Henry, Bruce Dern, Piper Laurie, Bel Powley, Jonathan Majors, Rapper YG, RJ Cyler, Taylour Paige, and Kyanna Simone Simpson.
