Cumberbatch and Gyllenhaal are up for a new Luca Guadagnino-helmed thriller by Steven Knight
Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, The Imitation Game) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Nocturnal Animals) are in talks for an upcoming untitled thriller, according to Deadline. The film will be directed by Luca Guadagnino, who is in post-production for the upcoming Suspiria remake starring Chloe Grace Moritz, Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton. The script comes from Steven Knight, who wrote Eastern Promises, Allied, and created and wrote the series Peaky Blinders. StudioCanal will finance and the film will reportedly begin shooting in early 2018. Guadagnino will also produce.
The untitled film is about two friends, “one a business titan and the other a journalist.” There is no other information other than that it’s set in “an exotic locale,” and that there is a “strong female lead.” According to the site, if the deals with Cumberbatch and Gyllenhall go through, SunnyMarch’s Adam Ackland and Nine Stories’ Riva Marker would be involved in the film with Ron Halpern from StudioCanal.
Cumberbatch is known for his work in the TV series Sherlock Holmes. He won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for the role of Sherlock. He’s appeared in Star Trek Into Darkness, 12 Years a Slave, The Fifth Estate where he played Julian Assange, and The Imitation Game, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also voiced and did motion capture for the role of the dragon Smaug in the Hobbit films. He played the lead role in Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange which he will reprise in the upcoming film Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War.
Gyllenhaal is known for for his work in the indie cult film Donnie Darko, Nightcrawler, Zodiac and Source Code. He was recently seen in the critically-acclaimed Nocturnal Animals. He’ll next be seen in the Boston Marathon bombing film Stronger and in the Cannes competition film Okia from Bong Joon-ho.
