Real Steel is the Worldwide Champ This Weekend

DreamWorks Pictures’ Real Steel opened in first place at both the domestic and international box office this weekend. Domestically, the Shawn Levy-directed action drama earned an estimated $27.3 million from 3,440 theaters, an average of $4,729 per location. Internationally, the Hugh Jackman-starrer added $22.1 million from 19 markets for a worldwide total of $49.4 million after one weekend. The film, distributed by Disney, cost about $110 million to make.

Domestically, Columbia Pictures drama The Ides of March debuted in second place with an estimated $10.4 million from 2,199 theaters. Co-written, directed, produced by and also featuring George Clooney, the film stars Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, Max Minghella and Evan Rachel Wood.

Last week’s champ, Warner Bros.’ Dolphin Tale dropped down to third with $9.2 million its third weekend for a total of $49.1 million. The family pic cost about $37 million to produce.

Columbia’s Moneyball also dropped two spots to fourth, bringing in another $7.5 million for a three-week total of $49.3 million. Starring Brad Pitt, the drama cost $50 million to make.

Summit Entertainment’s 50/50, which cost just $8 million, rounded out the top five with $5.5 million its second weekend and has earned $17.3 million so far.

Sixth place belonged to TriStar’s Courageous. The $2-million budgeted film collected $4.6 million this weekend for a two-week total of $15.9 million.

Despite hitting Blu-ray and DVD in Diamond Edition format this week, The Lion King 3D took in another $4.6 million and has now earned $86 million in four weeks of re-release.

In limited release, Emilio Estevez’s The Way earned $132,400 from 33 theaters for an average of $4,012, while The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) brought in $54,000 from 18 theaters, an average of $3,000 per site.
