A remake of the 1987 romantic comedy Overboard is on the way. The film will star Anna Faris (Mom, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) and Eugenio Derbez (La Familia P. Luche), according to THR. In the original film, directed by Garry Marshall, Goldie Hawn played wealthy heiress Joanna Stayton who acts terribly towards carpenter Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell) while he works on her husband’s (Edward Herrmann) yacht. When she falls overboard and gets amnesia, Dean brings her back to his house and convinces her that she’s his wife and the mother of his children. Though it begins as revenge, they eventually fall in love.
In the new version of the film, the roles are being switched around. Derbez will play “a spoiled playboy from one of Mexico’s wealthiest families” who falls off the yacht and gets amnesia. Faris will play “a single, working class mom: who convinces him that they’re married. The film is being remade by MGM, with Pantelion Films and 3Pas Studios. Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher co-wrote the script and will co-direct the film. Overboard will begin production in Vancouver in May, according to the site.
Americans might not be familiar with Derbez, but he’s a huge star in Latin America, starring in the series La Familia P. Luche. “The original Overboard was beloved and the only way to bring it back is to reinvent the story in a whole new way,” MGM Motion Picture Group President Jonathan Glickman told Yahoo. “Anna and Eugenio are two of the most charismatic forces in comedy whose take on the material will modernize the story for a whole new generation of moviegoers.”
