The cast of Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad, which currently includes Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Michael Peña, has added one more and it’s Anthony Mackie of The Hurt Locker, who will play former LAPD lieutenant Rocky Washington in the Warner Bros. police drama.
Mackie was last seen in Universal’s The Adjustment Bureau opposite Matt Damon, and he’ll be seen in the fall in DreamWorks’ Real Steel, plus he has a role in Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
With a screenplay by former Los Angeles Police Dept. officer Will Beall based on the Los Angeles Times‘ series “Tales From the Gangster Squad” by Paul Lieberman, it deals with the LAPD’s formation of the “Gangster Squad” during the ’40s to keep East Coast crime figures from setting up their base in the city.
