Warner Bros. Pictures thriller Unknown topped the four-day Presidents Day holiday weekend with an estimated $25.6 million from 3,043 theaters. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, and starring Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, January Jones, Aidan Quinn, Bruno Ganz and Frank Langella, the $30 million film averaged $8,419 per theater.
Coming in close at No. 2 was Touchstone’s animated Gnomeo & Juliet, which added $24.8 million over the four days to bring its total to $55.8 million after two weeks.
DreamWorks Pictures’ I Am Number Four debuted in the third spot, taking in an estimated $22.6 million at 3,154 theaters for an average of $7,166. Made for about $60 million, the D.J. Caruso-directed adaptation stars Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand and Callan McAuliffe.
Fourth place belonged to last week’s champ, Sony’s Just Go With It, which brought in another $21.7 million for a two-week total of $64.3 million. The romantic comedy, starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, carried a production budget of about $80 million.
Newcomer Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son rounded out the top five with $19 million, quite a bit below the first film’s $25.7 million opening and second film’s $27.7 million debut. Martin Lawrence was joined by Brandon T. Jackson in the Fox comedy, made for $32 million.
Paramount’s Justin Bieber: Never Say Never earned $16.5 million its second weekend and has reached $51.4 million after two weeks on a budget of just $13 million. A new version of the film is expected to hit theaters this weekend with 40 minutes of additional footage.
Meanwhile, Oscar contender The King’s Speech crossed the $100 million mark with another $7.9 million in its 13th week in theaters. The drama has earned $104.7 million so far domestically.
