Back in 2007, The Simpsons Movie was one of the biggest breakout hits of the summer, far exceeding any expectations at the box office. Many fans of the show knew that the movie was a long time coming, having been in development for many years before finally coming to fruition. Considering how fast hit movies have sequels greenlit, it’s somewhat surprising that there hasn’t been any official word on the sequel.
Earlier today, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk with the show’s executive producer James L. Brooks about his new movie as a filmmaker, How Do You Know, and we asked him whether that success has convinced them to do it all again for another movie sometime down the road.
“We’re open to it,” he told us, adding the disclaimer, “It was much harder than we anticipated. It took us a year to try and get to the point because we’re all so scared of ‘What are we going to do to the Simpsons’ and ‘What if the movie is no good?’ We were all so scared about that and I thought it took us a solid year of looking at each other to get to the point where we can get to the point where we don’t give a sh*t.”
He continued with the exciting news that they do have an idea for a second movie, “It was a huge success and we’re very open to it and we have a beginning notion if we want to do it, but the series always comes first with us. The series is always primary to us.”
