DisneyPixar’s Toy Story 3 opened to an estimated $41 million on Friday, a new record first day for an animated film surpassing Shrek the Third‘s $38.4 million. Playing in 4,025 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters, the movie could reach $120 million for the weekend, which is easily the best opening for a Pixar film. The Incredibles was the company’s previous best opener with $70.5 million.
Directed by Lee Unkrich, Toy Story 3 is voiced by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Estelle Harris, John Morris, Laurie Metcalf, R. Lee Ermey, Jodi Benson, Ned Beatty, Michael Keaton, Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Bonnie Hunt, Whoopi Goldberg, Kristen Schaal and Blake Clark.
Columbia Pictures’ The Karate Kid was in second place for the day with $8.9 million, followed by The A-Team in third with $4.2 million. Get Him to the Greek earned $2 million in fourth place.
Newcomer Jonah Hex rounded out the top five with a low $1.96 million from 2,825 theaters and looks headed for just a $5 million opening weekend.
