Dwayne Johnson Confirms 2016 Shooting Schedule and Rampage Writers

In a new Instagram post, Dwayne Johnson has layeth the writers down for the adaptation of classic Midway arcade game Rampage for New Line Cinema, and it looks like it’ll be a full-on San Andreas reunion with that film’s writer Carlton Cuse (as well as his “Colony” co-creator Ryan Condal) to re-team with that film’s director Brad Peyton and producer Beau Flynn. Non-Stop screenwriter Ryan Engle wrote the previous draft of the screenplay, the story for which is said to be “under wraps,” though it will involve Johnson going toe-to-toe with the game’s three original beasties.

EXCLUSIVE: Cool news we just hired Carlton Cuse & Ryan Condal (creators of COLONY) to write our big screen adaptation of RAMPAGE for New Line. Carlton also wrote SAN ANDREAS for us, so he excels at writing big scale with family and heart as the anchor. We have a shot to raise the bar and make something cool with this one as the basic storyline is three mutated gigantic monsters (Silverback, Alligator and Wolf) destroy major cities and landmarks across the US. This summer I’ll spend time at the San Diego Wildlife Preserve as well as with Anti-Poaching Units from Africa for my research. If you were a fan of the video game like I was, then you KNOW how bad ass and fun this movie can be. I’ll try not to screw it up . Shooting begins late this summer. #RAMPAGE * pictured is the RAMPAGE team (same team who brought you SAN ANDREAS) Director Brad Peyton (with the dope fade haircut), producer Beau Flynn (with the Grizzly Adams beard), Carlton Cuse (the constant intellectual with glasses) and some bald tattooed brown man who occasionally smiles. This will mark the third collaboration between Johnson, Flynn, Peyton and New Line having also worked on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and San Andreas together as well. The latter film earned over $473 million at the global box offices, making it the most successful original blockbuster of the summer 2015.

Released in 1986, the original Rampage put players in control of one of three monsters: A giant ape named George; a giant lizard name Lizzy; or a giant werewolf named Ralph. The game saw the monsters running amok across the United States, fighting the military, and destroying key landmarks. Several sequels were developed for the title as well, adding even more types of monsters to the playable roster and extending their path of destruction into the cosmos and even back in time.

It had been previously reported that Rampage would shoot after Johnson completes work on Fast 8, which is set for a release on April 14, 2017. That much was confirmed by a second Instagram post in which The Rock outlined his 2016 work schedule.

2016 breakdown of my shooting schedule (while maintaining relationships and being dad and daddy to the most awesome daughters in the world) and why I’m up at 4am everyday to train (aside from being slightly bat shit crazy). Once we wrap season 2 of #BALLERS (4 weeks left), the next day I’ll start shooting our “little” beach movie called #BAYWATCH (literally THE most successful TV intellectual property of all time – so the pressure is on – bring it). After a 12 week #BAYWATCH shoot, I’ll go right into shooting #FastAndFurious8. We’re a family, and playing the character of HOBBS is one of my greatest joys and I’ll make the promise to ya right now: I’m stepping on that set ready to rumble and raise the bar on all levels: The intensity, the tactical gear/weapons and especially that “Hobbs’ winking fun”. Since Fast & Furious 5, you’ve made HOBBS the highest testing character for a reason – and we’re gonna give new meaning to the catchphrase, “Daddy’s gotta go to work.” After approximately 12-14 weeks of shooting FF8, I’ll transition right into the big one… #RAMPAGE. Before we start shooting I’ll spend time at the San Diego Wildlife Preserve as well with Anti-Poaching Units out of Africa. As big and fun as this movie is, the key is grounding it in research and authenticity. The entire team that brought you San Andreas is back and we can’t wait to get started on this one. King Kong is just a little monkey compared to what these massive RAMPAGING ANIMALS can do. Now of course the universe can step in at anytime and throw a flag on the play, but as you see there’s a method to my madness of 4am wake ups for cardio & training hard – it anchors my day and allows me to 100% focus and prep for these roles – and the irony of this whole thing is all these roles pale in comparison to the most daunting, gratifying and holy shit scary role of all – being a father. But that’s for another fun discussion. And I close this long ass post with a question anyone who just trained calves would ask… do I or do I not have gum stuck on the bottom of my shoe? #Method2TheMadness #HardestWorkersInTheRoom #ChaseYourGreatness #AndCheckYourShoesForGum
