Ever since it was reported on January 11 that Sony would be rebooting their lucrative Marvel franchise with the fourth Untitled Spider-Man Film, there have been rumors and speculation about who might play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the new movie. A week after that announcement, Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) was named as director of the reboot, and various thoughts about who would play Spidey continued.
Possibly the most interesting name brought forward was 18-year-old Logan Lerman on February 4, who while doing press for his new movie Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief told Access Hollywood that he was in talks for the role, a claim that both Sony and the actor’s reps quickly denied almost immediately after the story ran, saying Lerman hadn’t actually had any talks.
The following week, many got to see Logan doing an impressive amount of action and heroics in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and it ended up opening with $38.7 million over the four-day Presidents Day weekend, yet there was no word on whether Sony was still thinking of Lerman as a contender.
Recently, the rumor that Lerman had indeed been cast in the role started popping up again and over the past 24 hours that story has been rolling through the tabloids and across the internet at a rapid pace. It was even mentioned on CBS’ “The Early Show” this morning.
Sony Pictures told us today, however, that this rumor is completely untrue. No one has been offered the job and the studio is not in negotiations with any actor.
We’ll let you know when the official casting announcements are made, so stay tuned!
