The 2010 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival is a little over a week away and while the opening night premiere of Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass is surely going to start things off with a bang on Friday, March 12, local filmmaker Robert Rodriguez wasn’t going to let the evening end there. The festival just announced that his summer sci-fi franchise relaunch, Robert Rodriguez’s Predators, will get a special “First Look” on Friday night at 10:15PM at the Alamo Ritz Theater, followed by an Q ‘n’ A.
Directed by Nimród Antal (Vacancy), the return of the alien assassins first introduced in John McTiernan’s 1987 sci-fi classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is described in the official press release as follows:
A bold new chapter in the Predator universe, Predators was shot on location under Rodriguez’s creative auspices at the filmmaker’s Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, and is directed by Nimród Antal. The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators. In addition to Adrien Brody, the film stars Topher Grace, Alice Braga, and Laurence Fishburne. Co-starring are Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali.
At the same time, SXSW announced that Géla Babluanis long-awaited English language remake of his noir thriller 13 Tzameti, now called simply 13, will be getting its premiere at the festival on Saturday night at Midnight as the previously Super Secret screening listed on the schedule. Like the original film, it’s about a naive young man who becomes embroiled in a deadly version of Russian roulette played by powerful men willing to gamble on the lives of others.
