This must feel like a punch in the face to Dan Aykroyd. For years, the actor/writer tried getting his co-star Bill Murray to agree to put on the jump suit and get the lasers pointing on Ghostbusters III, but he denied the chance at every turn. With Harold Ramis‘ passing, those options have basically deteriorated for Aykroyd’s sequel. Murray’s reluctance lead to a new film’s delay but, when it comes to Paul Feig‘s upcoming 2016 film, it appears the comedy icon has no qualms attempting to rival his Zombieland pop-up.
Though no official statement has come out from the studio, the Rock the Kasbah star was spotted on the Boston set and THR soon confirmed his cameo. He’s not the only star involved with the original committed to star, but if you don’t know who it is I’ll keep it vague. I mean, you can find out for yourself here, but I won’t twist your arm or anything.
What exactly Murray does in the film is unknown. It could be a third-act reveal, a Stan Lee-esque hello-and-goodbye, an on-the-street appearance or he could play a supporting role bouncing off stars Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy or Kate McKinnon. Also unclear is what exactly is happening with the future of the series. Nevertheless, we do know this: the answer to the first question will come when the movie spooks its way into theaters on July 22, 2016.
Update: According to Birth.Movies.Death, Murray’s character in the film has now been revealed. If you don’t want to know who he plays, advert your gaze accordingly.
In a role specifically written for Murray, he’ll play Martin Hess in the reboot, a “professional supernatural debunker, a sort of an Amazing Randi type.” He’s here to “prove” the ‘busters wrong and, although it sounds like a key player, it’s apparently just a tiny role.
