A little more than 38 years after the first film came to U.S. theaters, the original Star Wars trilogy flew its way into China theaters for the first time. That’s right, the Shanghai International Film Festival screened the first mainland Chinese theater screenings of the sci-fi films, as they showed all six films this week. And speaking of all six films, if you ever said to yourself, “Hey, I like these Star Wars movies, but I’d like to watch them all at the same time. You know, just to save time,” well, I got some good news for you.
First, the China screenings. If you’re wondering why the movies didn’t screen during its original 1977 release, the reason is because the nation was emerging from the Cultural Revolution at the time and, therefore, had yet to launch economic reforms to transform from the Communist-ruled country, Yahoo reported. Why it didn’t get screened before this, though? I couldn’t tell you. The first screening of the film was at the film festival, which screened the movies back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back from episodes I-VI on Sunday, although A New Hope also was screened separately on Tuesday. As expected, this was a (nearly) sold-out event.
At the moment, there are no plans for a nationwide release for any of the movies at this time. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see another one of these type of screenings later this year before or after Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens dominates the scene. I mean, if people are going to pay money to watch all eleven or so Marvel movies in one sitting, surely there are going to be people who want to see the original films on the big screen, even if they have to watch the prequels.
But before people get those movies back on the screen, you can watch all the original movies at the same time in the comfort of your own home in a sort of hypnotic, unusual experience. This isn’t the first time a fan did something like this but this should be the first time all six films were overlapped with one another. Yahoo also reported on the new YouTube video, titled “Star Wars Wars” which comes from YouTube user Marcus.
The video was posted about a week ago, and it hasn’t been taken down from the site yet. That may soon change, though, so if you want to watch the two-and-a-half hour “event” you can check it out below. Truth be told I haven’t watch it, but let me know if it’s as entertaining and interesting as it was when Red Letter Media watched the first three Transformers movies at once. For the record, that video is only 12 minutes.
