Johnny Depp is in talks to join Angelina Jolie in The Tourist, which is targeting a February production start.
Depp would play an American tourist drawn into a web of intrigue by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who is attempting to locate a criminal who was once her lover.
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star is replacing Sam Worthington (upcoming Avatar), who dropped out over creative differences, as has director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men) is in early talks to take over the director’s chair.
At one time, Bharat Nalluri was attached to direct with Tom Cruise in the lead role. Charlize Theron was also attached to the project for a long time, but was replaced by Jolie recently.
Julian Fellowes wrote the original script; Christopher McQuarrie and Jeffrey Nachmanoff did rewrites.
