There’s no doubt Phil Lord and Chris Miller are two of the hottest filmmakers working in Hollywood right now. The success of the Jump Street franchise and The LEGO Movie alone are evidence of that, not to mention evidence of how well they can shift between audiences going from an R-rated, juvenile comedy to a family-friendly feature based on plastic building blocks. Currently the duo are busy producing (and directing a couple eps) the new television series “The Last Man on Earth” (which was just renewed by the way), but next up is more Legos, more Jump Street and maybe even more than that.
Currently there are rumors swirling that Lord and Miller are being courted for Warner Bros.’ The Flash and Sony is said to still want their involvement in their upcoming Ghostbusters mega-verse. Then you have to consider the talk of the Jump Street and Men in Black crossover that won’t seem to go away since being a part of the leaked Sony emails, but today we have something a little more concrete concerning the next Jump Street film and it is actually rather interesting.
Topless Robot reports from WonderCon that when asked about 23 Jump Street Lord said, “We’ve found a way that we love that makes those imagined sequels canonical and yet does something that we haven’t told you about yet… The sequels are canon.”
[amz asin=”B00KPYT3LS” size=”small”]In case you’re unaware of what he’s referring to when he says “those imagined sequels”, I’ve include the end credits sequence from 22 Jump Street at the bottom of this post and considering one of them is 23 Jump Street I have to assume the next film in the franchise won’t be going with that title.
So what does Lord mean though when he says they’ll find a way to make them canon? Well, the best theory I’ve seen comes from Kate Erbland at The Dissolve. She write:
The next Jump Street movie will take place in Hollywood, and will star Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, stars of said franchise, desperate to recapture their former glory and restore their beloved franchise to something less preoccupied with going to space or whatever.
It’s so simply I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t think of it, but I have to assume this is exactly what they are thinking and Tatum and Hill are the perfect duo to pull it off.
