USER POLL: 2015 Golden Globe Award Predictions

The 2015 Golden Globe Awards will be held Sunday night, January 11 and we will be live-blogging the event and if you missed any of our previous award show live blogs just click here for a taste of what it’s all about.

However, before Sunday arrives I feel I must remedy something I neglected last year before the Globes, which is to not only offer my predictions, but give you the readers a chance to vote on yours. The voting each year is always fun to watch, most specifically because you guys always tend to collectively beat me. This year, however, seems like it might be a bit tough.

To begin, the Best Picture categories alone can be a bit tricky. I think Boyhood is the obvious pick to win the Drama category, but I could see both The Imitation Game and even Selma taking this one. A Selma win would also certainly spice up the conversation as it also releases wide this weekend. No better time to make an impact than right now.

The Comedy/Musical category is even harder. Birdman would seem to be the safest prediction in my estimation, but I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see Into the Woods or The Grand Budapest Hotel win. Just imagine if Into the Woods wins; it’s doing pretty well in theaters, the Oscar Best Picture line-up is stacked as it is and a win would mean we’d immediately need to take it into much stronger consideration.

In the Best Actor (Drama) category I have to go with David Oyelowo in Selma. There very easily could be a win for Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) or Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything), but in this case I have to go with what I believe to be the best performance of the lot. It would be interesting, however, to see Jake Gyllenhaal win as Nightcrawler is the lone original story in the field. Somehow that just seems to me like more of a “performance”, a creation of something entirely new rather than doing your best to capture the personality of a real life person.

The Best Actress (Drama) category seems a lay-up for Julianne Moore (Still Alice), a very uninspired pick, but it seems to be the no-brainer, though I’d very much love to see Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) take it and completely shift the dialogue when it comes to this category leading up to the Oscars.

Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) would appear to be another easy one as Michael Keaton (Birdman) would seem to have this one all locked up, especially with the way the HFPA separates dramas from comedies and musicals. I guess you could make a case for Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and I wouldn’t mind seeing that in the least, but Keaton seems the best bet. On the female side of the coin, I really can’t see anyone other than Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) taking Best Actress (Comedy/Musical).

Supporting Actor seems a lock for J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), but wow, that Supporting Actress category is a tough one. Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) is the perceived Oscar frontrunner and has been pretty much all year, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game), Emma Stone (Birdman) or even Meryl Streep (Into the Woods) walk away with this one. It’s anyone’s guess and a win for Arquette early could be a sign of how the night will go for Boyhood.

Finally, before I send you off to vote on your predictions, Best Director is one I have to predict for Richard Linklater (Boyhood) even though it’s a prediction I don’t feel entirely confident in. I guess I try and picture Linklater up there giving an acceptance speech and it’s hard for me to imagine, but if I’m making the safe bet I have to go with him.
