When I heard The Target was a remake of Point Blank, I immediately thought it was a remake of the 1967 film from John Boorman starring Lee Marvin as a man who was double-crossed by his wife and friend and left for dead. Nope. It’s actually a remake of a 2010 French film I don’t remember ever hearing about, but I guess it’s a pretty big deal as not only is there a Korean remake that will be playing Cannes, but apparently a U.S. remake in the works.
The version hitting Cannes is directed by singularly named Chang and the first trailer has just arrived and it’s one of those countdown movies — “They have 3 days!”. Here’s the synopsis:
Once a skilled mercenary, Yeo-hoon now leads a normal life. One day he goes on an errand and enters an office to discover a man murdered. The killers also attack and chase Yeo-hoon who is shot and wheeled off to a hospital. The murdered man is identified as a renowned corporate leader and Yeo-hoon becomes the prime suspect. He is admitted to the hospital where Tae-jun, who leads a happy life with his pregnant wife Hee-joo, works. While on night duty, Tae-jun saves Yeo-hoon from the killers. The next day, Hee-joo is kidnapped and Tae-jun receives a phone call demanding Yeo-hoon to be released from the hospital for her life. To save his wife, Tae-jun helps Yeo-hoon escape from the hospital and together they embark on a dangerous 36-hour pursuit.
The film stars Ryu Seung-ryong, Lee Jin-uk, Yu Jun-sang and Kim Sung-ryoung.
However, since we’re talking films at Cannes and films by John Boorman, it was announced this morning that Boorman has a new film — Queen and Country — that will be premiering at Cannes in the Director’s Fortnight selection. Check out the updated lineup The Playlist]
