Ang Lee apparently enjoyed his work with 3-D on Life of Pi, which earned him his second Best Director Oscar, as he has now reportedly set up his follow-up over at Universal, which is described by Deadline‘s Mike Fleming “as an epic look at the boxing world of the 1960s and 1970s, as seen through the prism of its biggest rivalries and greatest fights.” This is said to include the famous bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, also known as the Thrilla in Manilla.
There is no specific word on just how exactly this will be handled, such as will Lee use archival footage and convert it to 3-D or will the fights be re-staged and then shot in 3-D? The Deadline post says the “movie will have a narrative that connects the 3D depiction of some of boxing’s great fights.”
Just what fights will be included and how the narrative will be structured is unknown, but this is a rather fascinating turn in Lee’s career as this is one director that has pretty much tackled every genre possible, why not a 3-D boxing drama next?
