USER POLL: 2013 Golden Globe Award Winner Predictions

The 2013 Golden Globe Awards will be held tomorrow night, Sunday, January 13 and we will be live-blogging the event and if you missed any of our previous award show live blogs just click here for a taste of what it’s all about.

Before we begin the festivities, however, I thought I’d take a moment to offer up some predictions for the movie categories. I would try attempting the television categories, but I really have no idea and the movie categories themselves are going to be hard enough.

There are a few things to take into consideration, such as the fact Ben Affleck won Best Director for Argo at the Critics Choice Awards on Thursday and Argo then won Best Picture. As far as the nominations go, Argo tied with Django Unchained with five Golden Globe noms, second to Lincoln, which scored seven. Does this small fraction of information tell us much? No, not really. In fact, it offers more confusion than anything else.

For Best Picture (Drama), the favorite has to be Lincoln, but that doesn’t mean I don’t see Argo or even Life of Pi having a chance. My prediction is to go with the favorite, but feel free to bet against the house.

For Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) it’s a toss-up between Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook. I’m going to go with Silver Linings Playbook, but I don’t feel confident in the decision, which will be a running theme throughout the majority of these predictions.

For Best Actor (Drama) I think it’s the only obvious pick on the board and that would be Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), but for Actress (Drama) I’m going to go with Naomi Watts (The Impossible) over Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and I don’t really feel like I’m taking that much of a risk. This is, after all, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) we’re talking about here and The Impossible has so far grossed over $86 million worldwide, $82 million of that from foreign territories.

In the Comedy/Musical acting categories, for Best Actor I’m going with Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables) over Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) and for Actress I’m going with Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook). Cooper could end up taking this and I wouldn’t be the least surprised, but Jackman seems like the safer bet to me.

The Supporting categories are tough. In Supporting Actor you have a pair of Django stars competing against one another, The Master hasn’t made much of a dent internationally and I just can’t see Alan Arkin (Argo) taking it. Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln) seems like the only choice, but feel free to disagree. For Supporting Actress, if Daniel Day-Lewis is the #1 sure-thing to win, Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) is #2.

Then there’s director. I’m going with Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), but I debated between Ben Affleck (Argo) and Ang Lee (Life of Pi) as well. Wouldn’t it be something if Affleck ended up winning Critics Choice and the Golden Globe and yet he doesn’t have a shot at an Oscar because he wasn’t nominated? What if he ended up winning with the Directors Guild as well? Spielberg seems to be the smart bet, but I’m open to arguments otherwise. Had Life of Pi scored more overall nominations I wouldn’t hesitate to agree with an Ang Lee nom…

Screenplay was a tough one. For some reason I just don’t see Tony Kushner (Lincoln) winning with the HFPA, but if I don’t predict him to win who do I predict? Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained)? Chris Terrio (Argo)? I’m going out on a limb with David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook), but I won’t be surprised for a second if Terrio takes it.

Finally, Foreign Language. Amour all but has the Oscar locked up, but I think the Globes are going to go with one of the two contenders not nominated for an Oscar. When The Intouchables wasn’t nominated for an Oscar it was a shocker. I also wondered if the French submission committee started kicking themselves for submitting it instead of Rust and Bone. But how do you submit Rust and Bone over the highest grossing French film ever? For that reason, The Intouchables is my Foreign Language pick.
