It’s a lesson I should have learned by now: don’t bet against the family dollar in a coin flip match. This weekend it’s a three-sided coin, but I’m still going family dollar over R-Rated comedy and musical. Let’s break it down!
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 0 Weeks In A Row
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted
If Brave were coming out this weekend, getting all up in its demo, then it would have problems. But it’s against Sandler and “Glee meets Julianne Hough” instead. Should be an easy victory.
$176m worldwide, so the future is still somewhat cloudy here given the $145m production budget. But if you wanted to bet on the toys and merch game, you’d have to think Madagascar 3 is well positioned. And now they’ll be able to run with those “#1 Movie in the U.S.!!” ads for another weekend.
Prediction: $34 million
Oddly enough, I quite enjoyed it. A solid return to form for Sandler, very reminiscent of Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. No, seriously. I’m not sure if it was the adult rating, or Samberg getting involved. Whatever the case, I like it to eclipse tracking once word gets out.
Prediction: $28.5 million
3. Rock of Ages
I gave it a B-, which is entirely kind. All of the Hough angles were poorly conceived, but Tom Cruise crushed it. Tracking for Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy indicate something in the low 20s … so if you’ve got them winning I’d love to see your reasoning.
Prediction: $28.4 million
4. Prometheus
It’s going to face a steep drop, perhaps even steeper than 47 percent.
Prediction: $26.3 million
The biggest dipper of last weekend! What do they win? Another largish dip.
Prediction: $10.6 million
If they could have brought this in for $125m, Prometheus style, then they’d be looking good. UK Tax credits for everyone!
Prediction: $8.6 million
We’ve talked about this all summer, and right now all it’s doing is trying to get out in front enough to hold off The Dark Knight Rises. Probably not going to happen though.
Prediction: $6.9 million
I can never find accurate theater counts, so this is a dartboard special.
Prediction: $6.6 million
Samesies, though I’d love to hear why this had such broad international appeal.
Prediction: $2.1 million
How say you? Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy both cry out for predictions, but Prometheus and Madagascar 3 might be fun calls too. Predictions away!
