2012 Golden Globe Awards Live Blog: Winners and Commentary

[5:54:01 PM] Laremy says: When predicting Golden Globes, put yourself in the shoes of a HFPA voter. In other words, choose the most famous person. #Madonna

[5:56:26 PM] Brad says: Madonna gave us a journey as to how she wrote “Masterpiece” for W.E.. It went like this, “I finished the movie and wrote the song.” Awesome!

[5:57:32 PM] Laremy says: Can’t wait to watch that new show “Smash”! Finally, a show about life in the NFL.

[5:57:40 PM] Brad says: And the show is back and so are we… Katharine McPhee and Debra Messing will now present for Best Actor in a mini-series or movie

5:58:04 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television is Idris Elba (“Luther”)

[5:58:36 PM] Brad says: I don’t understand how mini-series and movie go hand-in-hand. I guess the same as comedy and musical.

[5:58:45 PM] Brad says: That’s HFPA logic for you.

[5:59:29 PM] Laremy says: When I first watched “The Wire” I wasn’t aware Idris Elba was British. Then I saw an interview, and it blew my mind, Fight Club style.

[6:00:10 PM] Brad says: Brad Pitt will now let us know The Ides of March is a Best Picture (Drama) contender. It’s also a film that gets better each time you see it.

[6:01:22 PM] Brad says: Kate Beckinsale and Seth Rogen are out and Rogen begins, “Hi, I’m Seth Rogen and I’m currently trying to conceal a massive erection.”

[6:01:33 PM] Brad says: And now they’ll present for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical)

6:01:50 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) is Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn)

[6:02:06 PM] Laremy says: Rogen wins line of the night for “I’m Seth Rogen, and I’m currently trying to hide an enormous erection”. He was standing next to Kate Beckinsale, and it slayed her too.

[6:02:34 PM] Brad says: Love Rogen’s call, “And Michell Williams for the hysterical My Week with Marilyn.” And she is getting the super-slow music play as she walks to the stage where she appears she may fall apart.

[6:02:48 PM] Laremy says: I called that Michelle Williams win. Then again, so did everyone else.

[6:04:00 PM] Laremy says: By the way, we both whiffed on that Mary J. Blige call. Are you upset about that?

6:05:02 PM: Nah, Madonna seems to be a real auteur and everything woman. You know, amazing!

[6:07:28 PM] Laremy says: Fair point. She’s got quite an oeuvre.

[6:08:13 PM] Brad says: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Piper Perabo are out to remind us they are still relevant and to present an award.

[6:08:19 PM] Laremy says: Piper Perabo was awesome in Coyote Ugly. She’s set for life!

6:08:51 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television is Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”)

[6:09:20 PM] Brad says: I really can’t wait to watch “Game of Thrones”. I’ve read the first book and loved it. I’ve heard Dinklage is great!

[6:10:35 PM] Brad says: So Dinklage’s mom apparently said, “But have you seen ‘Mildred Pierce’? Guy Pearce is so good.” To that he says, “That’s why we love our moms, they keep us humble.”

[6:11:22 PM] Brad says: Hey look, Gervais is back. Where has he been? “There’s a pecking order here, TV around the edge to movie stars in the middle.”

[6:12:47 PM] Brad says: Clooney comes out with a cane as a joke mocking Brad Pitt who apparently has a cane. Oh, and he’s introducing Moneyball as a Best Picture (Drama) contender.

And Gervais introduced him as the “Cloonmeister General… Georgio Clooney” or something to that effect.

[6:12:50 PM] Laremy says: Admittedly, we’d all watch a Clooney-Pitt prank war reality series. The only issue is the rights would cost a few billion dollars.

[6:13:35 PM] Brad says: Wait, Jessica Alba? It’s a ton of people we haven’t seen forever. And she’s out with C-Tates to tell us Rango is going to win Best Animated Feature.

6:14:44 PM: And the winner for Best Animated Film is The Adventures of Tintin

[6:15:06 PM] Brad says: What? Wow, The Adventures of Tintin gets a win. I was wrong, but who was actually right in this instance?

[6:15:59 PM] Laremy says: The HFPA just did what the Critics’ Choice refused to do: gave it up to Steven Spielberg.

[6:18:44 PM] Brad says: I guess the bigger the star the better chance for the win. Feeling good about my Meryl Streep prediction now.

[6:18:47 PM] Laremy says: How much longer does this go? Is forever a valid guess?

[6:20:58 PM] Brad says: Ewan McGregor will now tell us 50/50 is a contender for Best Picture (Comedy/Musical).

[6:22:20 PM] Brad says: Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman will now present Best Screenplay, I chose The Artist and Laremy went with Midnight in Paris.

6:22:49 PM: And the winner for Best Screenplay is Midnight in Paris

[6:23:16 PM] Brad says: Man, and I based my prediction based on the fact I knew Allen wouldn’t be there. He isn’t there and he still won. The HFPA fooled me!

[6:23:17 PM] Laremy says: I got that one right! Woody Allen wins for Screenplay. What do I win?

[6:23:55 PM] Brad says: Now Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy are singing to present the award for supporting actress in a TV mini-series or movie.

6:24:17 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television is Jessica Lange (“American Horror Story”)

[6:24:58 PM] Laremy says: I do appreciate that they sprinkle the television awards in so I can occasionally black out.

[6:25:06 PM] Brad says: I thought that should have gone to Evan Rachel Wood who has one of the few nude scenes in “Mildred Pierce” that I would actually say contributes to the story rather than purely being nude for the sake of being nude.

[6:26:33 PM] Brad says: Commercial break and I feel like the moment the server went down I lost any and all mojo.

[6:26:52 PM] Laremy says: I think more shows should explore the “never nude” phenomenon.

[6:28:40 PM] Laremy says: I’m really looking forward to this Big Miracle movie. Loved the original too, Kurt Russell was awesome as U.S. coach Herb Brooks!

[6:30:26 PM] Brad says: I wonder if Ricky Gervais was meaner last year or if he just hasn’t been on as much this year.

[6:31:47 PM] Brad says: Madonna takes the stage to present and she opens by saying, “If I’m still ‘Like a Virgin’ Ricky then why don’t you come and do something about it? I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years.” At that point Ricky Gervais runs away behind her. I laughed.

[6:32:23 PM] Brad says: Now Madonna is trying to convince us how cultured she is while introducing the Foreign Language nominees.

6:32:35 PM: And the winner for Best Foreign Language Film is A Separation

[6:32:37 PM] Laremy says: A Separation is going to win, because we’re all about making nice with Iran right now.

[6:33:08 PM] Brad says: That was a no brainer, the HFPA wouldn’t even go so far as to award Angelina Jolie just because she’s Jolie in this category.

[6:34:30 PM] Laremy says: That one guy from Iran was mean muggin’ the crowd. Very strange.

[6:34:33 PM] Brad says: Dustin Hoffman is the next presenter. I just got my screener copies of “Luck” and am looking forward to checking it out.

[6:34:57 PM] Brad says: He’s presenting for Best Actress in a TV series (Drama)

6:35:35 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Drama) is Claire Danes (“Homeland”)

[6:35:52 PM] Laremy says: Yes for Claire Danes. She’s awesome in “Homeland”.

[6:36:50 PM] Laremy says: Seriously though, “Homeland” is the best thing on television right now, and it’s not close. The biggest reason for that is Claire Danes. Respect.

[6:37:46 PM] Brad says: Playing Claire Danes off the stage and we are going to commercial. Good, I need a break.

[6:42:21 PM] Brad says: Why do the commercials for “Smash” say “Introducing Katharine McPhee”? She’s been in a movie. Who doesn’t know who she is?

[6:42:48 PM] Brad says: Emily Blunt will now tells us how great Bridesmaids is.

[6:44:34 PM] Brad says: Tina Fey and Jane Lynch are two funny ladies and they will now present for Best Actor in a TV series (Comedy/Musical)

6:44:59 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy) is Matt LeBlanc (“Episodes”)

[6:45:33 PM] Brad says: So you can win a Golden Globe for playing yourself. That is nice. I want a nomination next year because I play myself very well. Oops, that doesn’t sound good.

[6:46:32 PM] Laremy says: Matt LeBlanc gets a nice victory. He thanks his agents, who took about a decade off prior to this role (where he was cast as himself).

[6:47:05 PM] Brad says: Bradley Cooper will actually present for a movie… Best Supporting Actress.

6:47:30 PM: And the winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role is Octavia Spencer (The Help)

[6:48:07 PM] Brad says: Yeah, The Help is a major contender and going to become an even bigger contender for Best Picture after the SAG awards should they clean-up there as well.

[6:49:58 PM] Laremy says: Good for Octavia Spencer, she’s paid her dues.

[6:53:13 PM] Brad says: We are heading into the final hour of the show and that means it’s time for a page break. Please, join us on the next page as we try not to go into a Golden Globe induced coma.
