2012 Golden Globe Awards Live Blog: Winners and Commentary

Welcome to our live blog of the 2012 Golden Globe Awards where myself and Laremy Legel will be providing running commentary and up-to-the-minute winner announcements over the course of nearly five straight hours of Golden Globe excitement. This is the sixth year in a row we have provided a live blog of the events and hopefully this will be our best yet.

Over the course of the evening Laremy and I will be providing commentary, quotes, winners and anything else that comes to mind. I will be breaking things up on an hourly basis, providing a page break at the end of each hour to hopefully keep things manageable.

Also, in the right hand column you will notice I have placed a list of the winners, which will update live as they are announced, and if you feel as if you need a breather from the live blog, you can also catch my winner announcements on the official RopeofSilicon Twitter page as well.

If you’d like to catch up and see how we do the live blog around here you can check out previous installments at the following links: 2006.

You can also check out the full list of nominees click here.

While blogging, winners will be highlighted like this so they are easier to notice while reading and comments from myself will be timestamped and colored in red while Laremy’s comments will be colored blue.

The show begins at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM EST and blogging will begin around 4:00 PM PST or so with red carpet commentary. So, while we wait for things to get started why don’t you comment below and let everyone know where you are reading the blog from and I will be back shortly with the start of live commentary.

[3:09:39 PM] Brad says: Here is the first test post as I am watching the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers play a little football. Laremy hasn’t arrived yet, but will be here shortly so feel free to share your thoughts on what you expect from tonight’s show and we will do our best to keep you entertained throughout!

[3:33:16 PM] Brad says: I see a few other live bloggers are watching the E! red carpet… I just can’t do that, it makes me too sad. Once NBC goes live at 4 PM I will begin, but not a second sooner. My sanity must remain intact.

[3:36:37 PM] Brad says: And now I’m also nervous about my server crashing. Please server… don’t crash!

[3:56:56 PM] Brad says: So here’s the deal. The blog is being cached so if there is ever a moment you don’t think the blog is being updated, bear with us and I will be clearing the cache as often as possible. Gotta do what I can to keep things operational over here…

[3:58:42 PM] Brad says: Three minutes and counting before I have to switch from the football game to the red carpet… Every year they do this to me, but with Ricky Gervais hosting once again it should be worth it.

[4:00:04 PM] Brad says: I’m also curious, are most of you with me in thinking Meryl Streep is going to win Best Actress (Drama) or do you think Viola Davis is going to continue her run to the Oscars? Yes, I think Davis is going to win the Oscar regardless of what happens tonight.

[4:01:11 PM] Brad says: And boom, we have started the red carpet and I like it… no sound. Thanks NBC!

[4:01:38 PM] Brad says: Admittedly, Carson Daly does sound better when you can’t hear him.

[4:02:10 PM] Brad says: Oh, I bet Ricky Gervais is saying something funny right here. Wait for it… sorry, can’t hear him.

[4:02:30 PM] Brad says: Oh nice, now it’s sound track on top of sound track. NBC is on the ball.

[4:02:56 PM] Brad says: Ricky Gervais just said, “Expect the same as last year… If anyone was offended… I don’t care.” Good on yah, Rick.

[4:02:59 PM] Laremy says: Hi everyone, it’s nice to be here. The first order of business is my predictions. Please keep in mind that the 88 members of the HFPA are wildcards, and also that I’m already on my third cup of coffee.

[4:03:35 PM] Brad says: Thing is, did Ricky do himself a disservice by coming back? Won’t he just sort of seem mean now that he knows people were offended.

[4:05:49 PM] Brad says: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt batting questions back and forth with Carson Daly. Not too exciting.

[4:06:44 PM] Laremy says: Reading over Brad’s predictions I see we have only two different. Screenplay and Supporting Actress are the points of contention, I’ve got Viola Davis and Woody Allen, he’s got Streep and Hazanavicius. We’ll see.

[4:08:20 PM] Brad says: Zooey Deschanel appears to have sideburns. Bold choice.

[4:09:07 PM] Brad says: There’s Morgan Freeman, fresh off his People’s Choice award, a bet he’s on cloud nine.

[4:09:48 PM] Laremy says: Carson Daly just said he hopes Charlize Theron wins for Young Adult. Sorry Michelle Williams, guess Daly wasn’t a Dawson’s Creek fan.

[4:10:29 PM] Brad says: Paula Patton is giving making some REALLY weird faces. As one person in my living room just said, “It looks like someone just tickled her bottom.” Okay.

[4:11:03 PM] Brad says: Carson Daly appears to be testing how far away he can stand while interviewing people. Word must be out.

[4:11:36 PM] Brad says: Taking a break… Commercial time means checking on the football score time… Still NY 20 / GB 13… Go Giants!

[4:12:05 PM] Laremy says: Zooey is wearing a “one of a kind” Prada dress. Her description, not mine. ONE OF A KIND. You can’t hope to mimic her, sorry for your luck. Also, anyone have the scoop on why her and the Deathcab guy broke up? Was it over her pursuit of “one of a kind” dresses?

[4:15:14 PM] Laremy says: To his credit, Carson Daly didn’t say he wanted Michelle Williams to win when he was interviewing her. He simply wished her good luck. GOOD LOSER’S LUCK that is. Then he patted her on the tush and sent her on a way. Cold, I agree.

[4:15:22 PM] Brad says: Supposed to rain at the Globes eh? It actually snowed here in Seattle today.

[4:16:54 PM] Brad says: Hey, there’s George Clooney with Stacy Keibler who apparently is one foot taller than him. Oh, and very attractive.

[4:17:04 PM] Laremy says: Steve Buscemi talking Boardwalk Empire. I am of two minds here. First off, I want to make fun of the television portion of the Golden Globes. But I do enjoy Boardwalk Empire. White people problems, amiright?

[4:17:26 PM] Brad says: Wait, Nicole Richie is still around? Is it just Paris Hilton that disappeared?

[4:19:05 PM] Brad says: Elton John just dropped an eff-bomb, joking around saying, “Madonna doesn’t have a f–king chance.” I agree, my bet is on Mary J. Blige.

[4:20:33 PM] Laremy says: Does anyone know what the J. stands for?

[4:21:02 PM] Brad says: By the way, did you hear Corey Stoll, who played Ernest Hemingway in Midnight in Paris, was not invited to attend tonight’s Globes? #justsaying

[4:22:12 PM] Laremy says: Probably the same thing as the J in J. Edgar.

Also, Mary J. Edgar-Blige would be a pretty nice Youtube mash-up.

[4:23:14 PM] Brad says: Evan Rachel Wood is very pretty, and looks great in “Mildred Pierce”.

[4:24:37 PM] Brad says: Commercial break once again… 36 minutes until show start and New York is now up on the Packers 23-13

[4:25:31 PM] Brad says: Nevermind, now it’s 30-13… game over.

[4:29:56 PM] Brad says: Madonna in the house waxing about W.E. and rocking a weightlifting glove on the right hand. Andrea Riseborough isn’t allowed to talk.

[4:30:22 PM] Laremy says: Brad just asked me if I’m a fan of Madonna. I told him I liked Evita. That stunned him into silence.

[4:31:11 PM] Brad says: What will Morgan Freeman hold in higher regard his People’s Choice “Favorite Movie Icon” Award or tonight’s Cecil B. DeMille Award?

[4:31:27 PM] Laremy says: I loved Morgan Freeman in Robin Hood, the one with Kevin Costner. Back before Robin Hood sold out and got weird.

[4:32:58 PM] Laremy says: If you’re not watching Parks and Recreation, you really should be. Same with Up All Night with Will Arnett. This is the one time Carson Daly’s hyperbole is well earned.

[4:34:31 PM] Brad says: Viola Davis is cheesing on the red carpet, preparing that smile for her Oscar in February.

[4:34:45 PM] Laremy says: At some point Mila Kunis vs. Rachel Bilson was a legitimate argument in terms of star power. Not so anymore. Kunis smote her. Smoted her? You get the picture.

[4:36:33 PM] Brad says: Leonardo DiCaprio is discussing J. Edgar with Carson Daly. I wish he would just make stuff up and see if Carson goes, “Uh huh.”

[4:36:52 PM] Laremy says: Leo DiCaprio on the rojo carpeta. Remember when J. Edgar was a legitimate awards contender? It was a simpler time.

[4:40:36 PM] Brad says: Ahhh, those Packers got a touchdown and tried an onside kick. Didn’t get it, Giants ball… 30-20.

[4:41:36 PM] Laremy says: Joey from Friends makes an appearance! Is that nominated? What year is it?

[4:41:46 PM] Brad says: I did not know Matt LeBlanc was in a show where he plays Matt LeBlanc. At what point are you no longer an actor? And how do you get a nomination for playing yourself?

[4:42:50 PM] Laremy says: The show starts in 20 minutes. Why are you people still shuffling in? Get in there and get your drink tickets!

[4:42:55 PM] Brad says: Tina Fey has a big ol’ puffy dress on. Looks like she has some red wine-colored suds at the bottom. And that’s about as “fashiony” as I get.

[4:44:35 PM] Laremy says: Stacy Kiebler dates George Clooney? Isn’t that level jumping on her part? Unless she’s related to the cookie-making elves, I don’t see it.

[4:44:37 PM] Brad says: Major questions being asked, Ryan Kwanten was just asked if he’ll take his shirt off on “New Girl”.

[4:45:40 PM] Brad says: We have been asked to take a look at the “detailing” of Emma Stone’s dress. I don’t get it.

[4:47:32 PM] Laremy says: I saw Emma Stone on television at The People’s Choice Awards. I stood next to her for a spell during The Critics’ Choice Awards. Now she’s at The Golden Globes. Here’s my point: she’s gotta be over anecdotes and small talk. #justsayin’

[4:48:44 PM] Brad says: For those wondering, Giants are now up 37-20

[4:51:11 PM] Brad says: Nine minutes to go… and I am ready for this red carpet to end.

[4:52:02 PM] Brad says: No offense to Glenn Close, but sorry Natalie Morales, her transformation in Albert Nobbs was not “unbelievable”.

[4:52:48 PM] Brad says: Adam Levine is at the Golden Globes, but Corey Stoll is not… Makes sense.

[4:53:07 PM] Laremy says: Carson Daly just gave Adam Levine the business! They are “The Voice” pals, so it’s all good. I don’t want you thinking a war is about to break out.

[4:53:28 PM] Brad says: Ahhhh, he’s there to pimp “The Voice” and wear sunglasses and hug Carson. I get it now. *fist bump*

[4:55:25 PM] Laremy says: We’re five minutes away. I’m all tingly.

[4:57:23 PM] Brad says: Okay, one more commercial break before things kick off. I’m going to pop in a page break so we can get things started on Page Two.
