Predicting this year’s 2012 Golden Globe Awards is not an easy task and I’m really curious to see how the Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) turns out. Clearly The Artist is the front-runner, but wouldn’t it be interesting to see Bridesmaids or Midnight in Paris take home the Globe? Midnight is already considered a lock for a Best Picture nom, Bridesmaids is on the bubble line and then there’s The Artist. Things could get even more interesting…
After winning the Critics Choice Award for Best Picture last night, The Artist is gaining even more momentum to what many are considering a sure thing at the Oscars. At this moment, even I am bending from my prediction that The Descendants is going to take Best Picture. Unfortunately, the Globes won’t offer much help there as I fully expect Alexander Payne‘s latest film to take Best Picture (Drama) on Sunday night.
Elsewhere I have decided to go with Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) at the Globes over Viola Davis (The Help) as sort of a “gut instinct” call that I don’t think will have an effect on the Oscars at all. I think Davis has that award wrapped up.
The Supporting Actress category would have been a bit more interesting had Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) been nominated and I can’t help but wonder if there will be a divide among the two actresses for The Help, though I am expecting Octavia Spencer to enjoy another win.
I’ve also altered my predictions in the screenplay category compared to what I picked at last night’s Critics Choice Awards. Last night I was right with my prediction for Woody Allen‘s Midnight in Paris and Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillian‘s screenplay for Moneyball, but with adapted and original tossed together I see both going down to Michel Hazanavicius‘ The Artist, just as much as I see Hazanavicius winning for Best Director, Jean Dujardin winning for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) and Ludovic Bource winning for Original Score.
Essentially, I think it’s going to be a big night for The Artist, but I will gladly welcome a wrench in those predictions.
I’ve noted my predictions in bold and red directly below and will be back on Sunday, January 15 at 5:00-8:00 p.m. (PST)/8:00-11:00 p.m. EST with a continuous live blog of the events as Ricky Gervais returns for a third year in a row. I am also expecting Laremy to join me in a tag team live-blogging effort to bring you twice the entertainment along with Breaking News live winner results, up-to-the-minute updates on my Twitter account and everything else you could possibly expect and/or need.
If you’ve never tuned in for a live blog here at RopeofSilicon, just click here to check out last year’s coverage when Gervais stole the show.
